Deb and I did some wandering over the past 14 years: New Cumberland; Raleigh; Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, SC; Summerfield and Hudson, FL; Portland; Bainbridge Island, WA; Orient Beach, St. Martin; Montpellier, France; and now Alicante, Spain. We sold homes, gave away furniture and cars, downsized and lived out of backpacks and suitcases. Currently we're in Alicante, Spain, where we plan to settle (for awhile). I poked this long-dormant blog awake so I could chronicle our attempts to learn to live in a foreign land. Let's see what happens.

Fuoco Fatuo

When we left the condo in Myrtle Beach we packed everything we own into our Honda Civic in four hours.

Seriously.

It will get faster. We have a bag of winter coats that we brought along to Pennsylvania. We are leaving them here. We had some spare sheets; never used them. We gave them away. We have three duffel bags of clothing; one wasn't unpacked. We'll sort through that unopened bag.

I stumbled across a song from Nicola Conte recently. Called “Fuoco Fatuo,” it is about a nightclub (Noah's Ark) that is filled to capacity, no one gets in unless someone leaves. The chorus has the refrain, “One in, one out; one out, one in.” Deb and I use that as a guide to our possessions. If I order new tennis sneakers, an old pair is discarded. New jeans? The old ones go.

We're only four months into this adventure, but so far we love it. We don't feel any discomfort about not having roots anywhere and we enjoy the freedom of being able to call wherever we are home.

  1. I think this is very cool. You guys need a motor home though! If you ever feel the urge make a road trip to TX!

    1. No one wants me tooling around the highways in a motorhome. But we have been looking at the southwest. We want to check out Florida a little more first. We like alligators.
